The State of SteamOS Compatibility, 2026
What 15,965games actually look like across Valve's SteamOS hardware — joined from four independent sources over one catalogue. Every figure below is counted live from the same data this site serves; nothing is extrapolated to “all of Steam”.
Data as of June 2026 · reviewed by Mike · method in /methodology
How much of the catalogue actually runs
52% of 15,965 rated games hold a green Steam Machine verdict (8,274 titles), 1,564 struggle, and 6,127have no SteamOS signal strong enough to call. Verdicts are derived from Steam's own SteamOS/Deck compatibility plus a published spec model — not measured frame-rates.
The unrated share is the honest part of the picture: it is mostly the long tail of small releases Valve has never processed for Deck compatibility. We publish it as unknown rather than guessing, which is why the green share is a floor, not a marketing number.
Controller support is the quiet blocker
Of 7,673 titles that declare a controller category on Steam, 66% (5,053) support a gamepad end-to-end and 2,620 are partial — meaning a keyboard is still needed somewhere. On a living-room console that gap matters more than frame-rate.
Steam declares this per game (categories 28 and 18); we harvested the whole catalogue rather than the popular slice, so the denominator here is every game that states a level at all. Titles that state nothing are excluded — absence of a declaration is not evidence of missing support.
What the Linux community reports
201 games (2.1%) of 9,532 with a ProtonDB tier are community-reported as Borked — they do not run on Proton, the layer every SteamOS device uses. Platinum and Gold together account for 85% of rated titles.
| ProtonDB tier | Games | Share of rated |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum | 4,638 | 49% |
| Gold | 3,473 | 36% |
| Silver | 909 | 10% |
| Bronze | 311 | 3% |
| Borked | 201 | 2% |
These tiers are community reports shown verbatim — we never convert them into frame-rates. The Borked list is browsable at /collections/borked-on-steamos.
Where the 8 GB VRAM ceiling actually bites
Across 8,224 games whose Steam page states recommended specs, 1,686 ask for exactly the Steam Machine's 16 GB of RAM and 119 ask for more. Only 803 state a VRAM figure at all — of those, 12 exceed the Machine's 8 GB and 99 sit exactly on it.
The interesting finding is the sparsity: fewer than one in ten games with published requirements state VRAM at all, so “will it fit in 8 GB?” usually cannot be answered from the store page. That is why our per-game answer treats a stated figure as a signal and stays silent otherwise rather than inferring one from a GPU model name.
The couch-multiplayer slice
1,434 games declare local or split-screen co-op on Steam and 2,876 declare co-op of any kind, out of 5,105 with a multiplayer category. 1,866 titles clear all three living-room bars at once: green verdict, full controller support and ProtonDB Platinum.
That last cross-section is the one no single source can produce — it needs Valve's categories, the community's Proton reports and a per-game playability call joined over the same catalogue. Browse it at /collections/couch-coop-steam-machine.
Take the whole dataset
Every figure on this page comes from one table: 15,965games × 33 columns, joining our derived verdicts with Valve's declared categories, ProtonDB community tiers and Steam's recommended requirements. It is published in full — no key, no signup — so you can check our arithmetic or ask it something we didn't.
The repo's data dictionary labels every column declared (Valve states it), community (players reported it) or derived (our inference from a published spec model — not a benchmark). Not one row carries a measured Steam Machine frame-rate yet, and the docs say so plainly rather than hiding it.

Counts are of rows in our catalogue, not of Steam in its entirety. Verdicts are derived from Steam compatibility data and a published spec model; ProtonDB tiers are community reports shown verbatim; controller levels and recommended specs are Steam-declared. Method: /methodology.
